Separatist parties in Catalonia have won an absolute majority in the first elections since a controversial independence referendum in Spain's north, the electoral commission says.

The statement was issued late on Thursday with more than 93 per cent of votes counted.

The three pro-independence groups have the majority, leaving the door open to another government under ousted regional leader Carles Puigdemont, who led the independence drive that sparked a constitutional crisis in Spain.
